My Sex Educator Origin Story

Sex has always been something that fascinated and intrigued me. The idea that there was this thing that sounded so exciting, that everyone wanted but no one wanted to talk about, always had me seeking out whatever information I could find starting from a preteen. When I got old enough to actually have a sex life I reveled in the sense of connection and pleasure I found in it with myself as well as with partners. I always felt comfortable talking about sex and in fact loved to, over time realizing I helped people feel comfortable around the topic because they felt safe and able to share without shame.

I got started as a sex educator after I had some bad, traumatic experiences that left me feeling like I didn’t have control over my own sexual experience any more. I went searching again for a new sexual perspective and I found sex toys. I started out shallow but once I found the blogs from people like Hey Epiphora and Dangerous Lilly and found out about the vast variety of different sex toys, I dove deep and learned all I could. I started reading reviews and buying toys, learning more about my own body and how much more creativity, sensation, and pleasure these toys brought to my life.

Another turning point was finding out how sex toy materials were regulated- not at all!- and wanting everyone to not only have great sex toys, but safe sex toys that would last a long time and were made of safe materials. I wanted people to bring more pleasure into their lives, but I also worried about all the cheap crappy toys I knew were in a majority of adult stores and that could find their way to those gas stations or edgy mall stores that could easily be someone’s first experience.

Being something of a talker, I eventually finding myself giving anyone I reasonably could a little Sex Toy 101 Education. When I was at restaurants, the dance studio, with friends, or at college- I even once stopped in the middle of my birthday dinner with my best friend to give an impromptu talk to the bachelorette party in a private room! Eventually I had so many sex toys I had unwittingly acquired the Dildorium- the glass-shelved wonder that showcases all my toys. Then my former college professors started asking me if I would come give sex toy lectures, and I started going to sex ed conferences, and then I submitted a workshop for a conference myself, and it got accepted. It was time to stop procrastinating a make myself a website- so here it is.
